Institute of Public Health of Serbia ”Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut” (IPHS) ) is the leading institution in the area of public health in Serbia. IPHS was established in 1919 as the Ministerial Commission for Epidemiology organized by the Ministry of Health to perform communicable disease surveillance. IPHS provides expert support in the public health to the different stakeholders, cooperates with decision makers and partners from different sectors but also with partners from local level through its network of 24 regional institutes of public health. Main tasks of the IPHS include control and prevention of communicable and non/communicable diseases, maintaining and improving readiness in emergency cases, health monitoring and reporting, analysis and planning of health care, monitoring of environmental health risks, food safety, public health microbiology and clinical microbiology, managing health information system, public health research and health promotion. National Office for Smoking Prevention (NOSP) was established in 2006 at the IPHS. Tasks and responsibilities of the NOSP include expert support to different bodies and organisations in the tobacco control, participation in drafting of strategic documents, evaluation, general population surveys, smoking prevention activities and campaigns as well as cooperation with national and international institutions/organizations and civil society organizations.
