National Institute for Public Health and the Environment
RIVM is a governmental research and knowledge institute providing policy support to the Dutch government. RIVM performs tasks to safeguard and promote public health and environmental quality in the Netherlands. RIVM (~1,700 employees) has a proven record o faccomplishment regarding the execution of EU funded projects: involved in >70 FP7 projects and currently participating in about 24 H2020 projects.
Our experts participate in international networks and international expert committees of the EU, WHO, OECD and other international organisations and provide scientific advice for policy development. RIVM regularly performs research and provides advice to EU agencies such as EFSA, ECHA, EEA,ECDC and EMA. Tobacco product research is conducted at the Centre for Health Protection at RIVM.
The Centre for Health Protection focuses on human health impacts and risks of chemical and biological agents. RIVM’s tobacco-product-research-group conducts independent research hon the attractiveness, addictiveness and toxicity of tobacco and related products to gain insight in their health effects.
Our research combines various disciplines (chemistry toxicology, sensory science, psychology, risk communication, risk assessment) and contributes to drafting and enforcement of tobacco product regulation. In addition, our results are used to inform the public and for scientific dissemination.
