Silvano Gallus (ScD, PhD, male), Head of the Laboratory of Lifestyle Epidemiology.

He has been working in the field of epidemiology and public health since 1997. During his 25 years of career, he gained extensive experience inconducting independent research and collaborative work in the area of epidemiology andpublic health. Main fields of interest of Dr Gallus include the epidemiology of smoking in Italy and Europe, such as monitoring of smoking prevalence and trends in Italy, economics and determinants of smoking initiation and cessation; and the monitoring of the use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products in Italy; the design, data managing and statistical analyses of case-control studies on the association between several risk factors (including in particular tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, diet and obesity) and the risk of cancer, coronary heart disease and other chronic conditions, including tinnitus; the analyses of occupational cohort studies; the conduction and analysis of observational clinical studies; the conduction of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

For scientific merit,Dr Gallus was Honorary Associate Professor of the University of Nottingham (2017-2021)and received several awards, including the Ig-Nobel Prize for Medicine (2019). He is author or co-author of more than 410 publications, including more than 360 scientific papers, h-index: 65 (Scopus, April 2022).
