Environmental Health Officer

Barry Coady graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK with a Bachelor of Science (Honours’) Degree in Environmental Health in July 1999. Since September 1999, he has been employed as an Environmental Health Officer with the Health Service Executive (HSE). From the beginning of his career, he has worked predominantly in Tobacco Control. His focus has been the enforcement of Tobacco related legislation including significant involvement with legal proceedings, monitoring the effectiveness of current tobacco related legislation, and reviewing draft tobacco related legislation nationally. He has been involved in a number of local and national (published) tobacco related research projects.

His other tobacco related work involves developing and leading out on the delivery of compliance building training for the retail sector and developing and delivering post primary education programmes to help prevent and reduce smoking prevalence among children. Raising awareness of the legislation has always been a significant part of his role as an Environmental Health Officer.

Throughout his career, he has developed and lead campaigns with the aim of raising awareness among business owners, parents and other stakes with the goal of reducing smoking prevalence and achieving better understanding and compliance with the legislation. He has been a member of a number of tobacco related expert committees within the HSE, which involved oversight of tobacco related activities such as developing guidance documents, protocols and legislative reviews for the Environmental Health Service nationally. Since 2016, he has been appointed to the HSE National Tobacco Control Operational Unit, which over sees all activities nationally on behalf of the HSE that are tobacco related.
