Hellenic Cancer Society
The Hellenic Cancer Society founded in 1958, is one of the oldest Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Greece.
The scope of the Hellenic Cancer Society (HCS) is to promote cancer prevention by offering free screening testing (mammograms, PAP-tests etc) and organizing public health lectures that aim to disseminate and translate current medical knowledge on several aspects of cancer disease for the general public.
In addition, to facilitate and improve it’s scope, HCS holds fundraising campaigns. Having developed over 115 branches and reaching thousands of members and supporters all over the country, HCS has been established as one of the largest and most influential medical and social organizations in Greece.
Given that disease prevention and early diagnosis are key factors that have been shown to significantly reduce cancer prevalence, HCS activities focus on:
• Increasing public and health professionals’ disease awareness
• Promoting screening for early diagnosis
• Providing rehabilitation services and home care for patients with cancer
• Providing psycho-social support to health professionals
The “George D. Behrakis Research Lab” of the HCS, in addition to offering specialized lung function testing, develops and supports tobacco prevention programs.
